St.Mary's church yard extension was
surveyed by members of the Ilkeston and District Local History Society
between June 1981 and June 1987. However the cemetery since the said survey
has suffered greatly from the construction of the town by-pass (Chalons
Way) in the 1990s and from neglect and vandalism. Therefore many of the
headstones and memorials mentioned in the original survey may have been
moved, damaged or even destroyed.
The church yard extension can be located by walking down the alleyway known
as Anchor Row located off the Lower Market Place - past the
entrance to the Erewash Museum and along the footpath which passes
beneath the said Chalons Way.
On reaching the other side of the underpass take an immediate right turn
then along a path which will lead you into the old church yard.
