   MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS
ILKESTON ST.MARY'S CHURCHYARD

St.Mary's church yard was surveyed by members of the Ilkeston and District Local History Society between June 1981 and June 1987.
For the purpose of the said survey the church yard was divided into the following sections: A,B,C,D and D/a.
This page contains inscriptions from all the above with the exception of D/a which contains cremations dating from the last and current centuries.

Section A. Which lies south of the church bordered by the Cantelupe Centre to its north, the market Place by its west, by the church wall to its south and by a footpath to its east.

ASTLE. In affectionate remembrance of William Astle who departed this life September 19th 1853 in his 43rd year. I shall not die but live. Psalm CXVIII. 17.

ATHERLEY.
In memory of Sarah the wife of Henry Atherley who departed this life April 18th 1794 aged 70 years also Phillip their son who departed this life Jany 28th 1794 aged XXXVII. Remember man as thou pass by as thou are now so once was I as I am now so must thou be therefore prepare to follow me.

ATTENBOROUGH.
sacred to the memory of the late Mark Attenborough who died May 1st 1859 in the 51st year of his age. In affectionate remembrance of Alice wife of Mark Attenborough who died April 1st 1849 in the 49th year of her age.

BAILEY (and ELLIS).
Sacred to the memory of Gilbert Bailey who died September 16th 1811 aged 37 years also Jane wife of the above who died Novr 18th 1849 aged 79 Sarah Ellis who died March 16th 1843 aged 38 years also Elizabeth Ellis daughter of the above who died July 11th 1849 aged 21 years.

BOSTOCK.
Sacred to the memory of Sarah Bostock the wife of William Bostock who died August the 8th 1830 aged 77 years. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near. Isaiah chap 55 verse 6 and of William Bostock who died Feby 21st 1842 aged 90 years. The days of our years are three score years and ten and if by reason of strength labour and sorrow for it is soon cut off we fly away. Psalm XC verse 10.

BUCKLAND.
Erected in remembrance of Ralph Buckland who departed this mortal life on the 8th day of August 1812 aged 44 years Elizabeth his wife who departed this mortal
life on the 22nd day of September 1839 aged 67 years.


BURGIN-RICHARDSON.
Here lies waiting the resurrection of them that sleep in Jesus the body of Francis son of Francis & Rebekah Burgin Richardson who died December the 5th 1794 aged 23 also John their son who died November the 26th 1794 aged 11 likewise Mark their son who died March the 25th 1795 aged 6 and of William their son who died November the 24th 1791 aged 5 Ann their daughter died November the 4th 1782 aged 2. They were all of honest life loving neighbours free from strife sincere friends tender brothers tis hard to find out many others we must not stay since heaven has given the call but haste to him who has redeemed us all. Also of Francis Burgin who died July 14th 1800 aged 63.

BURGIN-RICHARDSON.
Sacred to the memory of James Burgin Richardson who departed this life December the 30th 1833 aged 50 years. The way that leads to endless rest perhaps thou ne'er hast trod but if thou wouldst be truly blest prepare to meet thy God. Amos 4c 12v.

Here lieth the remains of Mary wife of Robert Burgin Richardson who departed this this life June the 28th 1838 aged XXXV years.

CARRIER.
Sacred to the memory of Henry Carrier who departed this life December 14th 1852 aged 73 years also Elizabeth wife of Henry Carrier who died December 24th 1849 aged 71 years. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came unto the world to save sinners. 1st Tim 1,15.

COCKER.
Sacred to the memory of Isaac son of John& Hannah Cocker of this town who departed this life February 17th 1849 aged 68 years.

COCKER.
Sacred to the memory of Sarah daughter of John & Hannah Cocker of this town who departed this life August 1st 1827 age 48 years.

EVANS.
Sacred to the memory of Ann daughter of George and Mary Evans who died August 22nd 1815 aged 2 years and 8 months. Since God to take my child thought fit I'll be content to part with it because I know his heavenly grace will fit it for a better place.

In loving memory of Elizabeth Evans born February 21st 1814 died March 20th 1895 In loving memory of Richard Evans who died June 21st 1887 aged 77 years also George Evans who died May 31 1835 aged 55 years also Mary beloved wife of George Evans who died Jan 26 1856 aged 79 years.

GREGORY. Isaac -
Sacred to the memory of Isaac Gregory born Oct 17th 1824 died 23rd ... 1888. The will of the Lord be done also of Sarah Gregory of Gregory House Born October 24th 1822 died April 7th 1905.

HIGGITT.
Erected in memory of Henry Higgitt of Ilkeston Common who departed this life on the 23rd of May 1848 aged 88 years also in memory of Catherine Higgitt wife of the above who died 2nd July 1853 aged LXXXVIII years.

HIVES. Ann -
In remembrance of Ann daughter of John & Dorothy Hives and wife of Edwin Riley who died March 17th MDCCCXXXII in the 19th year of her age. Thou'rt gone ah never to return dear object whom we long shall mourn thie image on our hearts we bear for love has grow'd it deeply there.

HIVES. Ann -
To the memory of Ann daughter of Thomas and Judith Hives who departed this life December the 26th 1838 aged 10 months also in memory of Ellen their daughter who departed this life November 22nd 1841 aged 15 months.

HIVES.
In memory of John Hives who died April 28th 1834 aged 68 and Dorothy Hives wife of the above who died May 7th 1845 aged 71 also George and Elizth two of their children. Teach me the measure of my days thou maker of my frame I would survey life's narrow space and learn how frail I am.

HIVES. Judith -
Sacred to the memory of Judith wife of Thomas Hives who departed this life July 10th 1847 aged 42 also of Elizabeth Beardsley Hives daughter of the above who died Novr 2nd 1848 aged 14 years and 2 months. While friendship prompts the rising sigh O may this truth imprest with awful power I too must die sink deep in every breast let this vain world engage no more behold the gaping tomb it bids us seize the present hour tomorrow death may come.

HUNT (and HIGGIT).
To the memory of Ann Hunt the wife of Henry Hunt and daughter of Henry and Catherine Higgit who died June 16th 1830 in the 41st year of her age. Weep not for me my parents dear nor children whom I have left therefore prepare to follow me that you may all be blest.

LOWE.
Created to perpetuate the memory of Chrisr Lowe who died June 4th 1845 aged 66 years. He was a man of honest life a loving neighbour free from strife a sincere friend a loving brother. Mary Lowe who died October 17th 1835 aged 54 years. So good a wife so kind a mother she's with the Lord I do not fear.

Dedicated to the memory of Ann Lowe wife of John Lowe who departed this life November the 5th 1834 aged 75 years.

Dedicated to the memory of John Lowe who departed this life the 15th of November 1807 in the 54th year of his age.

Sacred to the memory of Catherine relict of Thomas Marshal of this place who died on the 10th of January 1867 aged 81 years. Sacred to the memory of Mary daughter of Thomas &Catherine Marshall who died July 7th 1877 aged 61 years also Sarah Ann daughter of Robert & Ann Marshall who died Novr 11th 1876 in her 16th year also Ctherine & Robert who died in their infancy also William Marshall who died March 22nd 1864 aged 8 months and Robert Marshall who died Septr

MOSS.
In affectionate remembrance of John Moss who died January 8th 1852 aged 54 years also Mary his widow who died July 13th 1856 aged 54 years. He that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. John XI 25 and 26.

MOXON.
Sacred to the memory of of the Revd Richard Moxon (Curate of this parish during Thirteen years) who departed this life April 1st 1836 aged 45 years. The Lord is my portion this tomb was erected by his sorrowing parishioners as the last tribute of respect to their faithful minister.

ORRILL.
In memory of Jonathon Orrill who died Febr 5th 1852 aged 70 years also Sarah wife of the above who died Decr 5th 1818 aged 63 years.

RILEY.
In memory of Hannah the wife of Thomas Riley Junr who was cut off as it were in a moment from the enjoyment and expectation of this life in the 36th year of her age April 13th 1823.

RILEY.
Sacred to the memory of John Riley who died July 14th 1852 aged 70 years and of Jane his wife who died in March 1824 aged 48 years.

SKEAVINGTON.
Beneath this monitor of human instability rest the remains of Rowland Skeavington who departed this life January the 23rd 1830 aged 24 years. My days on earth they were but few they wasted like the morning dew when i could stay no longer here I left my wife and friends so dear to the kind providence of heaven and died in hopes to be forgiven.

STRAW.
Sacred to the memory of Ellen the wife of Wheatley Straw who departed this life ... 1847 ... (damaged headstone)

Sacred to the memory of William Straw who departed this life the 4th of May 1810 aged 64 years. Blest be that hand divine which gently laid my heart at rest beneath this humble shade then by the solemn ties of friendship dear let no rude hand disturb my body here.

TAYLOR
. Sacred to the memory of Hannah wife of John Taylor of Little Hallam and daughter of the late John and Hannah Cocker of this town who departed this life the 18th day of November MDCCCXXXVIII aged LXVIII.

TAYLOR. Sacred to the memory of John Taylor of Little Hallam who died December the 15th MDCCCXLIX aged LXXIX years.

TUNNICLIFFE.
Beneath are deposited the remains of William Tunnicliffe son of William and Mary Tunnicliffe of Brailsford in this County who was parish clerk of this place during thirty one years and died on the XXIXTH of December MDCCCXLIX aged sixty six years. Perhaps the world some fault in me may see but is the world from imperfection free cast no reflections on my silent dust none has that right except it be just. Also near this place lieth the body of Sarah Tunnilcliffe wife of the above and daughter of Samuel and Mary Stevens of Stanley who died on the XIXth day of December MDCCCXXXIV aged fifty one years. I was with pain long time opprest which wore my strength away but hope for that eternal rest which never will decay.

Susan Turner died March 19th 1834 aged 6 months Godfrey Turner died Nov 24th 1835 aged 8 months.

WILSON.
Sacred to the memory of Ann daughter of James and Mary Wilson who died April the 28th 1831 aged 18 years also Mary their daughter died June the 28th 1832 aged 13 years. Young people all prepare to die since life is short and death is nigh repent in time make no delay we in our youth was call'd away.

WILSON. Sacred to the memory of Ann Wilson spinster of Lenton sister of James Wilson of this town who departed this life January the 13th 1842 aged LXIII years.

Sacred to the memory of James Wilson who died April 17th 1849 aged LXXVII years.

WILSON. Sacred to the memory of William Wilson Musician son of James & Mary Wilson who died December 28th 1835 aged 25 years. Be ye also ready. Matthew XXIVc 44v. The night cometh when no man can work. John IXc 4v. Also in memory of James son of the above James and Mary Wilson who died January 16th 1841 aged 22 years.

Section B. Which lies south-east of the church bordered by Section A, the Cantelupe Centre and a footpath to its south-west and west side and by the churchyard wall to its east.

BAILEY - In memory of Samuel Bailey who died Sept 12th 1858 aged 58 years.

BAKER -
In memory of Millicent daughter of Thomas and Phebe Baker died August 24 1836 aged 10 months.

BARKER -
In memory of William Barker who departed this life Nov 11 1887 aged 57 years. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. John Ch1 v 7 also Mary Barker mother of the above who died April 9th 1890 aged 77 years. Them which also sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. Also Aaron Barker son of the above William Barker who died Dec 21st 1891 aged 26 years.

BEALEY -
Here lie expecting the second coming of our Saviour Christ Jesus the remains of Elizabeth Bealey daughter of Samuel & Dorothy Bealey who died the 13th of August 1801 aged 23 years. Lo here my body lies till the last trump shall sound when Christ shall bid it rise from underneath the ground then to its peaceful rest my weary soul shall fly to be forever blest with God above the sky.

BEARDSLEY -
Sacred to the memory of Ann wife of Elijah Beardsley who died March 18th 1855 aged 38 years. Farewell dear husband I am gone before my love for you can be no more no grief nor sorrow for me take but love my children for my sake.

BENNETT -
The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord Job 1 v XXI Here rest till the completion of the redeemers promise, the body of William Bennett who departed this life May 3rd 1825 in the 45th year of his age also Elizabeth the wife of William Bennett whose sublunary destiny ended May 29th 1817 aged 35 years. In memory of John Brentnall who departed this life February 2nd 1848 aged 68 years. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psm CXVI 15.

Sacred to the memory of Hannah relict of John Clayworth who departed this life December 10th 1834 aged 81 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.

In memory of Elizabeth wife of John Daykin and only daughter of Joseph and Martha Turner who died 11 March 1850 aged 43 years.

EBSWORTH -
In memory of Olympia Marianne eldest daughter of the Rev George Searle Ebsworth M.A. vicar of Ilkeston and Sarah Mary Ann his wife born 8th January 1851 died June 15th 1851. Jesus said suffer the little Children to come unto me.

EVANS -
Feb 11th 1907 Edward Muirhead Evans Priest Vicar of Ilkeston 1887-1907 R.I.P. also in loving memory of his wife Sarah Louisa who passed into higher life April 11th 1930 aged 79 years. Well done good and faithful servant enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. St. Matt 25.21. Father in thy gracious keeping leave me now thy servant sleeping.

In loving memory of George Evans who died Dec 28th 1870 aged 63 years also Diana his wife who died Sep 8th 1885 aged 77 years also Martha their daughter who died Feb 13th 1889 aged 60 years.

Sacred to the memory of Maria daughter of George and Diana Evans who departed this life November 10th 1845 aged 2 years and 6 months and of Clara their daughter who died Nov 12th 1845 aged 5 months also in memory of Maryann daughter of George and Diana Evans who departed this life November 14th 1845 aged 6 years. Lament not friends at this our early fate there's nothing certain in this earthly state by God's command we're only gone before to wait your landing on this blissful shore.

In affectionate remembrance of Sarah the beloved wife of Joseph Fletcher who departed this life Novr 29th 1887 aged 75 years. Her end was peace. Also in loving remembrance of Joseph the beloved husband of Sarah Fletcher who died March 1st 1901 aged 84 years.

Erected to perpetuate the memory of George Green who departed this life June 4th 1844 aged 67 years. Prepare to meet thy God. Amos IVc 12v. Interred in the adjoining cemetery are the remains of John Green son of the above died Oct 25th 1887 aged 74 years also those of Ann his wife aged 73 years R.I.P. Sacred to the memory of Sarah wife of George Green who departed this life April 5th 1842 aged 67 years. My flesh and my heart faileth but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. Psalm 73XXVI also to the memory of George Green (son of the above) who died Novr 1st 1836 aged 30 years.

In memory of Sarah daughter of George and Sarah Green who departed this life August the 30th 1844 aged 33 years. By sudden death I'm snatched away death scarcely left me time to say the Lord have mercy on my soul so absolute is his con... reflect while this my grave you see the next thats made might be for thee.

In memory of Eileen Gregory daughter of William and Alice Gregory who died on the 30th day of January MDCCCXXXIX aged 3 years and 3 months. Sweet babe by death's cold hand in early bloom torn from thy mother's bosom to the tomb while o'er thy grave thy loving parents bend they trust their child has found a better friend.

Sacred to the memory of Esther Gregory the wife of John Gregory who departed this life October the 11th 1835 aged 61 tears. The best of wives this grave encloses here a loving mother to her children dear great was our loss but her eternal gain i hope we all in heaven shall meet again. Also in memory of John Gregory who died February 20th 1856 aged 88 years. A father kind a husband dear a loving friend lies buried here he liv'd in love and died in peace we hope his joys will never cease.

To the memory of William Jackson who departed this life the 19th of November in the year of Our Lord 1811 aged 63 years. To the memory of Ann Joanna the wife of William Jackson who departed this life March 25th 1809 aged 57 years. A virtuous wife and a mother dear a loving sister and a friend sincere death can't disjoin what Christ hath joined in love life leads to death and death to life above.

KNIGHTON -
Sacred to the memory of Mary wife of Joseph Knighton of Cotmanhay who departed this life January 23rd 1833 aged LVII years. Ye know not what shall be on the morrow for what is your life it is even a vapour that appeareth for a little time and then vanisheth away. James IVc 14v

LEE -
Sacred to the memory of Alice the wife of John Lee who departed this life the 28th of December 1810 aged 52 years also near this place lies 4 of their children who died in infancy. A loving wife this grave incloses a tender mother of her children dear great was our loss but her eternal gain with joy in Christ we hope to meet again.

In memory of Catherine daughter of Thomas and Catherine Marshall who died Feb 13th 1837 aged 6 years.

Erected to the memory of Lydia daughter of Thomas and Catherine Marshall who departed this life March 3rd 1836 aged XXII years. Let no tears of sorrow be dear relations shed for me tho' my earthly life is gone I have found an heavenly one.

Erected in remembrance of Elizabeth wife of William Rigley and daughter of Robert and Martha Walker of West Hallam who departed this life June 13th 1817 aged 37 years. Let me sleep and death convey (O God) forever more my spirit home to Canaan's happy shore.

Beneath rest the remains of John Roe of Cotmanhay who departed this life the 13th of February 1805 aged 48 years. Stop passengers and drop a tear twas sin alas that brought me here but Christ will raise me up again free from death and free from pain what faults you've seen in me take care to shun pray look at home there's something to be done.

SANDERS -
In memory of William son of William and Ann Sanders died August 6th 1793 aged 1 year also Sarah their daughter she died July 31st 1793 aged 4 years. Mourn not for us nor us lament for unto you we were but lent our years on earth they were but few and wasted like the morning dew when from this life we summoned were leaving a father and a mother dear to the kind providence of Heav'n and lived in hope to be forgiven.

SHAW -
In loving memory of John Shaw born September 2nd 1843 died May 9th 1899. In the midst of life we are in death. Jane the beloved wife of John Shaw who died March 14th 1886 in the 44th year of her age. He giveth his beloved sleep.

SISSON - In affectionate remembrance of Robert Sisson who departed this life July 6th 1860 aged 68 years. In affectionate remembrance of Emma daughter of Robert and Fanny Sisson who died September 19th 1861 aged 20 years. But he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes we are healed. Isiaiah 53 c 5 v.

SMALL -
sacred to the memory of Lambert Small born at Horsingham in Wiltshire and died at Ilkeston on the 2nd February 1834 aged 72 years and of Elizabeth Small relict of the above who died December 16th 1834 aged 67 years.

SMITH (and LOWE) -
In memory of Elizabeth wife of William Smith and daughter of Christopher and Mary Lowe who died on the XIXth day of July MDCCCXLVI in the XXXIInd year of her age also of Richard Smith their son who died in infancy.

SMITH -
Sacred to the memory of James Smith who by an unfortunate casualty met his death October 17th 1841 aged 49 years. He shall return no more to his house neither shall his place know him any more. Job chap VII verse 10 also of Ann Smith daughter of James and Elizabeth Smith who departed this life May the 17th 1842 aged 19 years.

In affectionate remembrance of Mary Jane daughter of Levi and Elizth Smith who died June 15th 1857 ages 5 months. This lovely bud so young and fair call'd hence by early doom just came to show how sweet a flower in paradise would bloom.

In memory of Thomas son of William and Nelly Smith who departed this life September the 10th 1796 aged 15 years and of Nelly daughter of William and Nelly Smith who departed this life August the 29th 1796 aged 15 years.

Sacred to the memory of Charles Straw son of William and Hannah Straw who departed this life October 30th 1800 aged 10 years. Mourn not dear friends for my untimely death the loss is small in losing of my breath my miseries and woes I see no more for dying makes me happier than before.

Sacred to the memory of Hannah wife of William Straw who died March 7th 1808 aged 62 years. The best of wives this grave incloses here a tender mother and a friend sincere our loss is great but her eternal gain with joy in Christ we hope to meet again.

TRUEMAN -
Sacred to the memory of Francis Trueman who departed this life June 19th 1774 aged 42 years leaving a widow four sons and three daughters to lament their loss. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Also Sarah the beloved wife of Francis Trueman who died Octr 12th 1818 aged 82 years. Therefore be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh.

TRUEMAN -
In affectionate remembrance of Keziah daughter of William and Mary Trueman who died Jany 11th 1858 aged 3 years and 8 months. Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven Mark 10 v14.

TURTON - Near this place lieth the remains of Ann Elizabeth daughter of Joseph and Rosanna Turton who departed this life January the 21st 1843 aged one year and 8 months. Jesus said suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not such is the kingdom of Heaven. Erected in memory of Joseph son of Joseph and Rosanna Turton who departed this life August the 24th 1848 aged two years and three months. Here lies a little mortal boy a fathers and a mothers joy to God above his spirits flown with Christ is his eternal home.

WADE -
Sacred to the memory of Joseph son of Robert and Mary Wade a youth of gentle and amiable manners he departed this life deservedly lamented by all his friends and acquaintances March 20th 1807 in the eighteenth year of his age. Farewell kind youth to all my friends most dear who will remember thee while here we stay trusting when summon'd hence to meet thee where no sorrows dwell nor death can take away. Also James who died in his infancy.

WALLS (also MARSHALL) -

Sacred to the memory of William Longdon of Cotmanhay farmer Sergeant of the East Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry and many years Guardian of the Poor Collector and Assessor of Taxes and Constable for the parish of Ilkeston in his death hastened by his unremitting exertions his afflicted widow has lost a kind husband the Shipley Troop, a trusty yeoman the parish of Ilkeston, an invaluable officer and the whole neighbourhood a conservator of the peace whose name was a terror to evildoers he died on the 17th May 1827 in the 42nd year of his age and was buried here with military honours his numerous friends have caused this monument to be erected as a testimony of their esteem.
