SOUTH STREET BAPTIST CHAPEL ILKESTON

South Street Baptist Chapel cemetery was surveyed by members of the Ilkeston and District Local History Society in May 1981. none of the memorials detailed below are visible today Some having been removed from the cemetery and since lost, while others were buried beneath the ground.

BLOUNT -
In remembrance of Mary wife of George Blount and second daughter of Samuel and Hannah Newton of Cossall who departed this life June 21st 1846 aged 36 years. A virtuous wife, a mother kind and dear, whose love remains, in hope are buried here, a numerous offspring, wife the father mourn, the loss of her who can never return, still unto each, may this bless'd hope be given, that through the Saviour, all may meet in Heaven.

BLOUNT -
In remembrance of Sarah wife of George Blount of Lenton Lock and daughter of Samuel and Hannah Newton of Cossall who departed this life August 21st 1820 aged 28 years. A tender parent, wife and friend sincere her all to Heaven's peculiar care strong in the faith of Christ and of his word she trusted every promise of her Lord and tho' from earthly friends now torn away she hopes to meet them in eternal day.

HARDCASTLE - In full assurance of a glorious immortality, here rest the remains of Ann, the wife of Phillip Hardcastle, an itinerant Minister in the Methodist Connexion, she died in this town April 20th 1814, aged 45 years. what ... friends prepare.

HITHERSAY -
Sacred to the memory of John Hithersay, son of James and Ann Hithersay, who departed this life on the 6th of February 1840, aged seven months, and also Emma Hithersay, daughter of the above who died March the 1st 1840 aged 4 years and four months. Ere was sin could blight or sorrow fade, death came with friendly care, the op'ning buds to Heaven convey'd, and bade them blossom. - and John their son who died March 22nd 1841 aged 15 days.

SEAVERN -
In memory of Elizabeth the wife of James Seavern who departed this life March 2nd 1812 aged 30 years. The summons came, without long warning given, which called her soul from earth, to dwell in Heaven, without delay, O! may the living hear, the call, and for eternity prepare.

TWELLS - To the memory of Ann Twells daughter of John and Catherine Twells who departed this life, January 24th 1847, in the 20th year of her age. My time was short, my years but few, like as the grass, or morning dew, mourn not for me, the change is great, seek but the Lord, and we shall meet.

TWELLS -
To the memory of Ann the beloved wife of William Twells, who departed this life July 19th 1850 in her 26th year. She is gone to the land of the blest, weep not then dear friends for her no more, with her saviour she ever will rest, serene on her Heavenly shore. Also Hannah Twells daughter of the above who died August 28th 1856 aged 5 years and 9 months. Jesus said suffer the little children to come into me, and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven - MATT XIX 14.

TWELLS - Sacred to the memory of Eliza Twells, daughter of Joh and Catherine Twells, who died November 2nd 1829 aged 17 years and also of Ann Twells who died August 14th 1821 aged 6 years - and John Twells who died February 27th 1850 aged 8 months, son and daughter of the above. Through all life's changes whether good or ill, we know that God's command is peace be still, that sovereign will, we dare not disobey, 'twas he who gave, 'twas he who took away, and though berift of those who claim our love, we hope to meet them in the world above.

TWELLS - This stone is erected to the memory of John Twells who departed this life November 20th 1833 aged 47 years.

WEST - To the memory of Hannah widow of William Barnes West of Ilkeston, who died May 2nd 1861, aged 76 years. Her end was peace.

WEST - Here lie the remains of William Barnes West (Late of this town) who departed this life February the 2nd 1831; aged 48 years. "A man who was endowed with many excellent qualities, an affectionate husband and indulgent parent, of inflexible integrity, and a steadfast but above all, a firm believer in the word of God, and the gospel of his son who has said, I will raise him up at the last day". John 5th Chap. 10 Verse.
